The MSc13(1980) Class Scholarship

We’ve spent a great deal of time reflecting on what kind of support truly embodies the spirit of our class, and we’ve concluded that helping one or several students pursue an MBA at LBS – and experience the same transformative two years we did back in the late seventies – resonates most deeply.

With the cost of attending LBS now significantly higher than when we were students, we understand that some talented candidates face financial barriers to pursuing an MBA there. This can mean that some exceptional candidates who fully meet the School’s criteria may, without our support, have to forego the opportunity of joining LBS’s  world-class MBA programme altogether.

To help bridge this gap, we have established the MSc13 Scholarship to support deserving and high-potential candidates, with a preference for students with demonstrable financial need, to join the MBA programme at LBS.

Establishing a named scholarship  – the MSc13 (1980) Class Scholarship –   required us to raise at least £150,000 through donations.  We are immensely grateful to David and Molly Pyott for generating the momentum that boosted our classmates’ donations through their very generous  ‘matching contribution’ which doubled any donation made by 31st July.

Yes yes yes, we have reached our minimum target that guarantees a scholarship in our class name to support MBA candidates with demonstrable financial need. A very impressive 34% of the class have made donations, placing MSc13 in first position this year for class participation.  Coupled with David & Molly Pyott’s incredible ‘matching contribution’, our MSc13 fund now stands at to almost £153,772.  Any additional donation will help us support more deserving candidates, so the fund stays open for further donations at any time.

Scholarships are very important in enabling LBS to attract the best students and avoid losing exceptional candidates solely due to financial constraint. In 2023/24, LBS awarded 140 scholarships to 33% of its full-time MBA students. The School’s aim is to increase this level significantly to improve the acceptance level of MBA places offered to candidates. On average US schools offer scholarships to 58% of students, and in Europe it is around 45%.

For full details, see our Q&A page.

Any further donation made by members of the class will be, (unless otherwise stated by the donor), directed towards the MSc13 Scholarship.

You can make your contribution either as a one-time donation, or as a pledge paid in monthly/yearly instalments over up to five years.

London Business School can also claim Gift Aid on donations from UK taxpayers, while classmates residing in the USA, Canada, or Hong Kong can benefit from tax-efficient giving mechanisms. If you do not reside in the above-listed countries, you may contact Layla Black (lblack@london.edu) to discuss options available in your country for tax-efficient giving.

The MBA programme at LBS is continuing to transform lives, just as it did for us
